About Dr. Ruth Steinman
Dr. Ruth Steinman completed her residency in adult psychiatry and then her fellowship training in geriatric psychiatry, both at the University of Pennsylvania, in 1992. She had remained on faculty there until retiring as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in 2024. She was the psychiatrist for the Abramson Cancer Center of the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania for over 8 years where she worked with cancer patients experiencing psychological and psychiatric difficulties, combining individual psychotherapy with psychopharmacologic treatment. She completed psychoanalytic training at the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute.
In addition to her clinical work, teaching and supervision of trainees have been important aspects of her work. She has taught courses to residents and fellows and has lectured extensively to professionals, patients and families on coping, loss, grief, and psychological reactions to medical illness.
Dr. Steinman is Board Certified in Psychiatry and is a member of many local and national professional organizations including the American Psychiatric Association and the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society.
